Just Culture in Marine Pilotage
Simon has been Chief Executive Officer of Australian Reef Pilots since 2011. ARP currently employs more than 40 marine pilots engaged in both compulsory and non-compulsory ship’s pilotage in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and bulk ports in Queensland, Northern Territory and New Zealand. ARP’s motto, “Guardians of the Reef” has its roots more than 140 years ago when pilotage of square rigged sailing ships through the treacherous Torres Strait was pioneered.
Prior to joining ARP, Simon spent 3 years in the Middle East engaged in the design and construction of offshore production platforms for the oil and gas industry. During that time, his company was awarded the J. Ray McDermott Middle East Safety and Quality award in recognition of achieving 3 million man hours worked without lost time incidents.
In a maritime industry career spanning more than 30 years, Simon has been involved from shop floor to senior management levels in boat and shipbuilding, deep sea commercial fishing, ship repair and maritime consultancy. He has extensive experience in designing, developing and testing high performance small craft, both mono and multihull. He was recipient of the 1991 Churchill Fellowship to study global best practise in maritime technology.
