The Shifting Legal Landscape of Marine Pilotage
Ambrose has had nearly 50 years of experience in the shipping industry based in Europe, Asia and Australia including sea service on a variety of trades, as a harbour pilot in Penang and as an Oil Major berthing master at several locations. He subsequently gained management experience in marine terminal operations, ship agency, refinery operations, offshore operations upstream, chartering, voyage commercial operations and executive management of a publicly listed ship owning company and of a ship management company.
He has engaged in legal practice specialising in maritime and international trade law for the last 17 years and has maintained an academic interest in the law relating to pilotage commencing from his time on the Pilotage Working Group at Intertanko in the late 1980’s. He delivers the pilotage law module at the Advanced Marine Pilotage Training program run by Smartship Brisbane.
In addition to the Class 1 Master Mariners qualification, he has an LLB (Hons) from Monash University, an LLM (Maritime Law) from the University of Queensland, an MBA from the University of Melbourne and a post graduate Diploma in Notarial Practice from Victoria University. He was a Chartered Shipbroker and is admitted as a barrister and solicitor in the Supreme Court of Victoria and the High Court of Australia. He is appointed as a Notary Public by the Supreme Court of Victoria.
