Neil Farmer started his seagoing career in 1975 as Cadet with the Australian National Line progressing through the ranks on Roll on Roll off vessels, Bulkies, Container ships, Bass Strait passenger ferry and the Light House tender Cape Pillar.
He later worked for Brambles Shipping on the Bass Strait trade where he gained his command and pilotage exemptions for Melbourne and Burnie.
In 1992 Captain Farmer accepted a sort after position as Tug Master with Waratah Towage where he worked in Sydney, Port Botany and Newcastle. He later accepted a Sydney Pilots position in 1997 and continues to enjoy piloting on the best harbour in the world.
Neil’s inability to say no has resulted in his involvement in three International Pilotage Conferences where he was the Chairman of the organising committee.
Neil’s term as AMPI President comes to an end at this conference and he looks forward to having more time to enjoy sea kayaking along the NSW coast and helping with his first grandchild which is due this week.
